COURSE OVERVIEW

ASTI Dubai offers this Higher International Diploma in Quantity Surveying with the approval of  KHDA,Govt.of Dubai along with TVET,NQA & QAD. Higher International Diploma in Quantity Surveying qualification is designed to prepare learners for last year of Bachelors’s Degree in Quantity Surveying or a high paying career in construction field.This course is practical & skill oriented which makes the student very acceptable to the engineering industry.

Higher International Diploma in Quantity Surveying

Level of Course
HID is a Level 5 qualification (equivalent to the second year of a UK Bachelor’s Degree). There is an embedded level 4 exit qualification, the Level 4 Certificate.
Number of Credit Hours
Upon successful completion of the course the student will have completed at least 15 units and 240 + credits. On completion of Level 4 certificate the student will have completed at least 8 units and 120 + credits.

The HID is a level-5 qualification delivered over two years, the first year at level 4 and the second year at level 5. If a student opts to take the HID, the student would be eligible for a Higher International Diploma after successful completion of a minimum of 15 modules.

Intended Learning outcomes:

After completing the course, the student will be able to:
  • Apply the knowledge of Technical Science and Applied Mathematics in Quantity Surveying Engineering.
  • Recognize, Formulate and Solve complex problems using Applied Engineering Mathematics, Science in Engineering Principles.
  • Design and Develop solutions/processes in the aspect of Structural Stability, Construction Safety and Durability for Construction Engineering problems such as Foundation, Sub, and Super Structure.
  • Synthesis of Building Information, CAD documents and Material Procurement for the Construction project by creating, select or apply appropriate IT/ Engineering Tools, Software and Techniques.
  • Use current techniques, knowledge of Environmental Impact on Construction Buildings, Construction Safety Awareness, Skills, and Tools necessary for Construction practice.
  • Use Research-orientated knowledge to develop social and apply research methods includes Design of Experiments, Analysis, and Interpretation of data; create Mathematical Modeling, use of Computational Tools to solve complex Quantity Surveying problems.
  • Manage Construction Projects for Planning, Analyzing, Costing, Scheduling, Predicting and complete within the stipulated period and fund.
  • Effective communication by Reading Blueprint Designs and Drawing, Resource and Material requirement according to project needs.
  • Apply suitable Material, Engineering Techniques based on Environment to Service, Maintenance, Repair and Rehabilitation in Construction.
The Higher Internation Diploma Level 4 is made up of 120 credits and be completed over a years’ time. The Higher Internation Diploma a combination of both levels 4 and 5 and is made up of 240 credits, this qualification is usually studied full-time/part-time over two years.

The award is made up of 15 units: Mandatory core units are:

Technical drawings with Engineering Graphics

  • ULO1 - Use the appropriate tool to develop technical drawings
  • ULO2 - Ability to understand and interpret technical drawings.
  • ULO3 - Ability to provide the required information in technical drawing according to process and operation.

Workshop and General Safety

  • ULO1 – Ability to select appropriate tool and process for the required application
  • ULO2 – Ability to understand basic operation in manufacturing and production
  • ULO3 - Ability to maintain safety procedure and use safety tools and equipment in engineering practice

IT Application for Engineers

  • ULO1 - Ability to create, select or apply appropriate software tools to improve the performance.
  • ULO2 - Develop documents and report preparation skills for various engineering activities such as approval, quotation, design, and estimation.
  • ULO3 - Ability to performance analytical calculation, synthesis and interpret the data.

Construction Economics

  • ULO1 - Ability to understand the field of construction economics and finance deals with the systematic evaluation of cost and benefit associated with different projects
  • ULO2 - Ability to apply principles of engineering economy followed by basic methods for carrying out economic studies.
  • ULO3 - Ability to understanding the underlying principles and concepts in construction economics and finance.

Project Management

  • ULO1 - Ability to explore and understand goals from the outset of the project, and to consider all factors that may affect its execution
  • ULO2 - Ability to explore how effectively communicate, manage people and employ leadership skills.
  • ULO3 - To implement various project management techniques.

Applied Mathematics for civil engineering

  • ULO1 – Ability to solve algebraic manipulations and mathematical functions in the solution of engineering problems.
  • ULO2 - Ability to solve analytical geometry problem in the construction
  • ULO3 - Ability to apply trigonometry methods and use ordinary differential equations to model and solve engineering problems
  • ULO4 - Apply mathematical software to the solution of engineering mathematics problems.

Civil Estimation and costing.

  • ULO1 - Ability to introduce the student's in-depth knowledge of professional practice as well the quantitative analysis of construction works like multi-storied structures, Waterworks & sanitary works, Irrigation works
  • ULO2 - Ability to understand the Determination of quantities of items and labor requirement and Preparation of estimate of the civil engineering works.
  • ULO3 – Preparation of specification of construction items.

Contract Practice

  • ULO1 - Appraise the importance of contract performance management and the role of negotiation in establishing performance measures.
  • ULO2 - Establish key performance measures and their corresponding criteria in relation to the project business environment and deliverables.
  • ULO3 - Critically appraise key contract and project monitoring and control techniques and their importance in achieving a successful outcome.

Interpersonal Project

  • ULO1 - Development and strengthening of Multidisciplinary Team Building and Teamwork practices
  • ULO2 - Effective use of Verbal, Written, and Visual Communication methods
  • ULO3 - Awareness of Ethical Issues and ethical decision-making practices

  • ULO1 – Inspect the impact of engineering solutions in a global, societal and environmental contexts.

  • ULO1 – Ability to develop real-life systems and in order to visualize dynamic behavior.

  • ULO4 – For a better understanding of what drives risk and return in the financial system.

Site survey and Practice

  • ULO1 - Ability to handle various site surveying and leveling equipment.
  • ULO2 - Ability to solve basic calculations in the survey field.
  • ULO3 – Operate surveying instruments and Understand the role of the Land surveyor
  • ULO4 - Use standard computer software packages to post-process survey data and deliver appropriate spatially referenced information and Prepare land survey plots and contour maps for a selected projectt

Environmental impact of construction

  • ULO1 - Ability to Understand the importance of hydrological influences for civil engineering projects
  • ULO2 - Ability to Identify quality control methods for water supply and discharge
  • ULO3 – Ability to Understand water & wastewater treatment processes.

Construction Materials and Methods

  • ULO1 - Ability to understand the type of behavior and properties of various construction material
  • ULO2 - Ability to apply construction method based on application suitability.
  • ULO3 - Ability to apply construction techniques in various constructions includes excavations, foundation, framing, and structures.

Measurement and documentation

  • ULO1 - Ability to understand concepts underlying the requirement to quantify and specify construction work.
  • ULO2 - Ability to establish the underlying principles required for the independent production of tender documents.
  • ULO3 - Ability to design and measurement required for private practice, contracting and public service.

Building Planning and Management

  • ULO1 - Ability to develop knowledge organizational structure and contract forms
  • ULO2 - Ability to select the principles and possible applications of the methods listed below used for planning, management and costing
  • ULO3 - Ability to carry out professional and interprofessional teamwork to be documented through the methodology and working process.

Professional Ethics and Human values

  • ULO1 - Ability to create an awareness on Engineering Ethics and Human Values.

Sustainable Energy Refurbishment and Conversion

  • ULO1 - Ability to understand energy-efficient and sustainable refurbishment.
  • ULO2 - Ability to understand the different types of certification schemes used in relation to sustainable construction - composition of materials, characteristics, working up.
  • ULO3 - Ability to development of architecture in relation to sustainable construction.

Financial Cost Management

  • ULO1 - Ability to prepare a budget cost report for building projects of a limited nature
  • ULO2 - Numerical skills to determine accurate rates for items of common building work
  • ULO3 – To appreciate the contribution made by differing members of the building team involved in the pre and post contract cost management processes.

Construction Technology

  • ULO1 - Ability to understand the general principles of construction and scope of building bye-laws and regulations governing the construction of large buildings
  • ULO2 - Ability to Explain setting out showing underpinning access roads, storage, and temporary building are preliminary activities on site.
  • ULO3 - Ability to Identify problems of ground water on adjacent property.

Maintenance Technology and Management

  • ULO1 – Understand various tools required in the fitting operation
  • ULO2 – Ability to remove and fit the automobile system and components
  • ULO3 – Utilize the safety and operating knowledge in material handling

Leaner must score a minimum of 240 credits to be awarded level 5 Diploma.
The learning and teaching strategy for  Higher International Diploma in Quantity Surveying are designed effectively & efficiently so as to attain the 240 credits & gain the intended learning outcomes as per the module.

The general approach to enabling the learning process for most modules involves:

Due to the wide variety of modules included in this programme, there may be different approaches adopted that are appropriate for a particular module. At the start of each module, tutors will provide a scheme of work which details the module structure, assessment and learning and teaching approaches to be adopted.

The following criteria must be met in order to secure admission to ASTI Dubai. Academic (at least one of the following)

  • Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution or body
  • A Level 3 qualification in Engineering
  • A minimum of 2 years of industrial experience or relevant professional experience.

Scholarships covering 20 % of tuition fees are provided to students.

A limited number of scholarships are available for students with outstanding academic performance and personal qualities.
